To be honest, the idea of the self and the meaning we attach to it is rarely related to the self and more to what perceive this ‘self’ for us! Every time we think what will others think if I do this or that, every time we think that what will people say or what will people react or worse what if we will no longer be accepted in the society, we are reducing the idea of the ‘self’ and creating an image of a society-created-self.
